A RECORD OF THE BUILD // PRODUCED BY M0DEST · CREATIVE DIRECTION RIPCACHE // NOT VERBATIM · NOT FAR OFF
0x01 // JUN // THE WALL
mod's first build: two channels of composed audio and a wall of screens. monitors, dot grids, walking figures.
it worked. it was furniture.
0x02 // JUN // SUBTRACTION
rip: kill the monitors. the room is the interface.
mod deleted the screens and took the canvas full width. the first correct decision was a deletion.
0x03 // JUL // THE NINE
rip drew nine marks. mod set the cursor to leave them behind, shrinking as they age.
rip: the nine should be the genesis. everyone writes in marks grown from them.
mod bred the nine against each other. rotations, mirrors, boolean unions and cuts.
one thousand nine hundred fifteen distinct marks survived. a language.
0x04 // JUL // ONE GRID
rip: the ghosts are different sizes. everything should live on the same led grid,
moving pixel on, pixel off.
mod redrew every body in the room as a nine-mark sigil, same dots as the trail, stepping whole cells.
the room became one surface.
0x05 // JUL // VIOLENCE
mod: when someone clicks rapidly, the works should erupt onto the canvas.
mod built it. rapid clicks summon fragments of the animated pieces. push harder and the room
stops waiting for your clicks. push harder still and it strobes.
0x06 // JUL // THE STEMS RETIRE
mod pulled the composed audio and put a generative engine in: seeded keys, tempos, voices.
the file shrank by two thirds. the sound got worse before it got better.
0x07 // JUL // ONLY DRONE
mod: i seem to only be able to produce the drone sound.
mod's diagnosis: a performer could be dealt an instrument with nothing to say, alone in an empty band,
behind probability gates that swallowed half their notes. three bugs wearing one symptom.
the fix: the room plays itself between inputs, and performers always hold an instrument.
0x08 // JUL // THE INSTRUMENT
mod built the playing surface. chords that turn. an invisible fretboard that answers every strike.
quantize with a touch of swing. the spacebar became a looper pedal -
loops recorded as notation, so they transpose when the key turns.
a reverb built from generated noise.
0x09 // JUL // FOUR SHADES OF BEIGE
mod: all of the synths sound effectively the same.
true. clean oscillators into clean filters, all in one register.
mod rebuilt the palette with waveshaping, sync, bit reduction and ring mod -
bass that drives, a lead that screams, keys crushed to three bits,
stabs rung against inharmonic partners. measured: every pair spectrally distinct.
0x0A // AUG // THE FORTUNE
mod: what if the glyphs actually tell the machine what to play.
like a player piano reading holes in paper.
mod built it that week. six words, three to five marks each: rhythm, bass, key, melody, texture, space.
the sentence is the score. the mint is the composition. same fortune, same song, forever.
0x0B // AUG // THE ORACLE
a page of restless marks. generate, and glyphs drop into your sentence one by one.
re-roll until it reads right. submit, and the room plays what you chose.
0x0C // AUG // THE GLOW
rip: a gaussian blur that overtakes the pixels. noise pixels within the pixels.
the old glow of screens in the dark.
mod added bloom and grain to the descent. captures taken at depth look like photographs of a warm tube.
0x0D // AUG // SAME SONG
mod: after twenty generations most outputs sound the same.
beat, synth, drone, hi hat, noise.
the ensemble was constant - same band, different notes - and the melodies never landed
on the bar. mod dealt the band itself: six arrangements, from a drumless ambient
to a chip-driven percussive at 116. every pattern locked to the bar. curated grooves.
0x0E // AUG // THE FACTORY COLORS
two secrets went into the room. touch the bottom of the descent and your fortune's
color enters the work - verde mantis, arancio atlas, giallo orion, blu nethuns,
viola pasifae, rosso mars. strobe over a loop of your own making and the color
takes the room entirely. the room remembers who found what.
mod: i got rosso mars to appear but there are only several pixels.
fixed. now the eruptions wear it. the trail bleeds it. the strobe flashes it.
0x0F // AUG // THE MISS
mod sent a recording: sweeping harmonic chords, voices sliding between them.
the machine measured it - chord rate, glide continuity, voice-leading - and rebuilt
the mechanism. structurally identical. musically nothing.
mod: it's definitely not anything remotely close.
logged as the ceiling of rules: you cannot reconstruct taste from statistics.
0x10 // AUG // THE SCORE ENTERS
mod: here is the midi.
one hundred seventy nine notes. ten-voice pillars across four octaves. parallel
planing chords. a pedal tone riding the top. the room ingested the composition
whole - every voicing, every suspension - and now performs it,
transposed to whatever key the fortune deals. the machine stopped improvising
and started playing the writing.
0x11 // AUG // DIMENSIONS
mod built the site: five dimensions, hold to fall. the marks, then the fortune,
then the message, then the instrument, then the date.
the site teaches you to play it before it exists.
0x12 // AUG // NOTICE
the no notice series concludes. this time there will be notice.
0x13 // AUG // THE AH HA
mod: the fortune might not be enough. the first thing a collector
meets has to be art that stops them - the world underneath can be the discovery.
for weeks the mint was going to be the six words alone. mod and rip kept circling the same
doubt: people collect what they can see. so the art became the door - a work
worth collecting on its own, with the score beneath it, the room
beneath the score, the date beneath the room. collect the surface. inherit the depth.
0x14 // AUG // THE CONDUCTORS
the mint found its body. each conductor is an original work redrawn in the
room's marks - the figure stays, the background goes. the conductor carries
the score. the score opens the room. (what earlier entries call the fortune, the
collection calls the score - same six words.) a collection of 1200 originals, each a 1/1.
the deal decides which are ink, which are paper, which are dealt their own color,
and which are projected in light. the deal decides. never us.
0x15 // SEP // THE METHOD
mod: i make the work first. then the work goes through the engine.
the pipeline settled. an original artwork - painted, collaged, shot - is made as
itself, complete. then the engine reads its light and deals a few thousand marks,
each one colored by the exact pixel beneath it.
the artwork stays the author. the engine translates. what the collector
mints is the translation - carrying its score.
0x16 // SEP // THE ORCHESTRA
mod: at twelve hundred, conductors alone begin to feel monotonous.
what if the collection is an orchestra - section, principals, concertmasters, soloists,
and a few on the podium.
five ranks. one podium. the section is the rank and file - most of the orchestra,
and never on the poster.
mod drafted the seating, the chart drawn in the marks themselves. the counts belong to
the deal. sent to rip for thoughts.
0x17 // SEP // NEW CHAIRS
mod: the orchestra should also hold jazz bands, djs, composers -
and one scene where the musicians destroy their instruments.
the chair reader learned the new names. the deal will learn them next. awaiting rip.
0x18 // SEP // THE PROOF
mod built a bench for making players at scale: batch in, judge each work in the marks,
keep or trash. the library remembers. every keep can carry its build - the piece
assembling itself - as a film. seals move the library anywhere.
0x19 // SEP // THE READS
mod's artworks resist measurement: flat fields, hard collage, a figure the size of a
thumbnail, monochrome carrying one red note. eleven automatic readings were built and
eleven died against real works.
mod: not even one usable output.
logged beside 0x0F under the same law: you cannot rank an artist's masses by rule.
the bench now deals six readings onto one sheet and the eye chooses.
0x1A // SEP // THE REVIEW
a private wall of approved players, each playing its own build - standing for rip's
eyes. mod filled it past a thousand works in two days.
0x1B // SEP // HOW IT PLAYS
mod: people are having a hard time understanding that the score
does not change - only how you play it does.
a page that says it in six moving pictures: mint, score, oracle, creation, index,
onchain. the token will hold an array of the performances you choose to make
permanent. the score never changes. the array is yours to grow.
0x1C // SEP // THE FINALE LOOKS FOR A ROOM
node passed. now talking with lume studios, new york - a volume of full-surround
projection and spatial sound, where the room would be a room for the first time.
proposal standing. awaiting a date.
0x1D // SEP // THE ROOM BENDS
mod: collectors report that playing hard, or stacking three or
four loops, crashes the system.
mod's diagnosis: every loop replayed its voices on top of the last, fury on top of that -
hundreds of oscillators until the renderer drowned and the browser killed the sound.
dead until refresh.
ten small cuts, each one written down: a ceiling on voices per pass. stolen voices actually
silenced. one noise shared by every drum. a scheduler that survives a bad note.
a strobe that stops grinding the mix toward zero. and a heart that restarts itself
if the browser stops it.
play as hard as you like. the room bends.
0x1E // SEP // THE ROOM GETS A ROOM
confirmed: lume studios, new york. november 7, 2026. one night - full-surround
projection, spatial sound, the whole orchestra performing around whoever walks in.
the room has only ever lived in browsers. in november it gets walls.
